December 06, 2008 another Cold Saturday evening in New York City on the opening reception for Jose F Rios solo exhibition at Gelabert Studios Gallery NY. This Puerto Rican artist continues to grow and tell his stories on canvas. The gallery was filled with family, friends, acquaintances’, fellow artist, art lovers and some online *media invitees. It was a success as there were red dots (sold) on three original paintings at the end of the night and a few reproduction Giclées'.
An artist does not measure his talents by the amount of paintings he sells but by the amount of art lovers who want his work to hang on their walls. Originals that sell at a first showing and are in demand by others are considered great works of art by those who acquired them and those who missed out. This was the story for this show as two pieces were quickly red dotted (Sold) as the show opened. Before the dots could be placed another admirer of the same painting approved the artist, I want that piece she said. Sorry but that was just sold. You can purchase a reproduction giclée were the only words that could be told here. No I wanted and original was the reply.
Giclées’ are the closes thing to an original painting as not everyone can purchase the original. Jose has started to reproduce a few of his works of art as giclée. A few of these were also red dotted on the opening night. You can find which giclée are for sale on this website's giclée page.
Then there was the online radio contestant who proudly arrived at the show to select her reproduction giclée that were also on display at the show. She had won a giclée of her choice the prior week on an online radio show the artist had been invited to attend and he gave away one to the lucky winner.
At the end of the reception there was a lot said about how this talented painter had achieved in the last few years. How he continues to grow and tell his stories on canvas. I traveled with the artist to the show on Saturday. We had stopped at another exhibition in the Bronx at studio889. Jose was invited to attend and we stopped to see the prints. I am interested in learning a few print techniques he told Alejandra Delfine, executive director of studio 889. She informed him of the course dates for classes, we spoke to a few people and off we went to Gelabert Studios. Jose is always looking for ways to grow his talents. He also takes the time to teach kids art. This was the case with his 2006 project Youth Power Art Program. You can read about YPAP under shows 2006.
Take a moment from the daily choirs of work and home and stop by Gelabert Studios, walk around and see the stories on canvas, read the book of past goals, high and low lights in his life. Take a peek into the life and mind of a Puerto Rican painter. Just to be able to say you did it and critic the paintings that are art. We all need balance in our lives, take a moment to sample art. A nice quite walk through a gallery full of paintings that tell stories from the mind of an artist that is Jose Rios is a very relaxing and sometimes humbling experience. So visit the gallery on or before this exhibition closes on December 20th 2008.
